Prepared by Marion-Polk Food Share, Meals on Wheels promotes the nutritional health, independence and social well-being of seniors and disabled adults in Salem and Keizer. We offer hot meals hand-delivered by volunteers Monday through Friday with the option of having frozen meals delivered on Fridays for the weekend.
The average age of those we serve is 85 years of age. Living alone in most cases, our clients need help avoiding senior hunger and maintaining their nutritional health. For many, poor eating habits stem from loneliness and a lack of desire or skill to cook. Others are challenged to eat well due to illness, disability or financial need. 60% of those we serve are woman. Most suffer from one or more chronic disease or disability – such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and arthritis. More than one-third of our customers live at or below the poverty line.
